If you're trying to stay on-budget with car seats, I think it's wise to opt for a convertible option. We've purchased two convertible seats for our kiddos once they outgrew the infant car seat, and it's a great investment for the future, especially if it includes a booster-seat option. You're going to get a ton of mileage out of a 3-in-1 seat (pardon the pun), which just makes the most since if you don't have a money tree growing in your backyard.
I write all of this because I saw a pretty sweet discount right now from Amazon on this Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 Car Seat (Matrix). It's normally $189, and you can bet it's about the same price in stores, but it's on sale for just $129, and ships for free. The seat has mostly 5-star reviews, which is what really caught my eye. Here's a short description:
Top-rated by leading consumer publications, the Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 Car Seat grows with your child by offering three forward-facing positions. Designed for children 20 to 100 pounds, the Nautilus transitions from a harness booster to a highback belt-positioning booster and finally to a backless belt-positioning booster seat. This LATCH-equipped seat is outfitted with reinforced steel, and features a three-position recline and height-adjustable headrest to help make every ride more enjoyable.
Basically, if you're kiddo is ready to graduate to a booster seat, this one should last you until they are ready to use the seat belt. With all of the latest recommendations for how long your child should remain in a booster, you're going to be glad to only buy one!
