make your own granola bars (plus money-saving deal on the ingredients)!

  {Disclaimer: I have not yet made this recipe, though I intend to soon. I am currently out of oats and stuck at home due to some major snow.}

  I was perusing Pinterest last night for a good recipe to use some free puffed kamut cereal I picked up at Albertsons this week. I happened upon this delicious and easy chewy granola bar recipe by The Crunchy Catholic Momma. Healthy and homemade, and I'll show you how to do it on a budget, too, using Vitacost!

  First, sign up here for a $10 Vitacost credit, good toward any purchase! Once you've created your account, you'll see this message:

  Now, here is the ingredient list with links to several of the items. I'm assuming you have the more staple ingredients, but you should be able to find those (excluding the butter) on Vitacost, too:
2 c oats (Bob's Red Mill, 32 oz. for $4.05)
1 c wheat bran (Bob's Red Mill, 10 oz. for $1.47)
1 c sunflower seeds (16 oz. for $3.22)
1 c puffed millet (Arrowhead Mills, 6 oz. for $1.74)... I am going to substitute puffed kamut!
1 c raisins (organic, 16 oz. for $3.77)
3/4 c brown sugar
1/2 c honey
4 tbs butter
2 tsp vanilla bean paste (substitute extract if you don't have paste)
1/2 tsp sea salt
  If you add one of each item linked to your cart, your total will be $14.25, plus $4.99 shipping. After the $10 credit, though, your total will be only $9.24, or $1.84 per item! Take into account that you should be able to get several big batches of granola bars out of this purchase, you'll be saving money in comparison to store-bought granola bars.

Perhaps this won't beat a good coupon and sale matchup, but it's quite satisfying to make your own snacks and know just what your kiddos are eating! If you decide to make this recipe with me, please come back and let us know what you thought of it!
